Aether, without getting too far into the weeds means basically the air we breathe. The substance that surrounds us that we cannot avoid. And, Aetherfoil suggests a surface that responds to this aether in a manner which utilizes the characteristics of that ‘air’ to maneuver (or simply to perform in our case). The reason I have allowed the term “veil” to also be present in a tentative manner is so that we can see what lies in the balance. The difference between a “foil'“ and a “veil” is almost night and day. However, both are ‘the first surface’ the differences begin to emerge as we probe into their meanings. It is most clear in the decisions we choose, which term suites our goals best.

Much like hydrofoil. Emphasis on “utilizes” …. I think of this as highly considerate. So we are creating a volume encased by an envelope which is shaped by the very substance it is intended to occupy whilst simultaneously acting as facilitator of that which ‘happens’ on either side. It must result in something ‘natural’ and I say that knowing that our brains will pre-populate our memory of previous executions that claim this “natural” term and have perhaps been poorly executed…. let’s not execute poorly.

Sculptor. An example of a successful execution. Important to note that this is in China. The manual skill level is more closely matched (and capable). There is a refinement which is easy to identify in the results but more difficult to know, how it is implemented from the beginning. I see beautiful/accurate proportions, proper curves, wether it be an abstract shape, a water splash or a figure/character, the execution is well done… even despite our subjective opinion on the subject matter itself. Furthermore, these sculptors are following up wit a full conviction in the execution. They are crude in simplifying what it takes from the beginning (just hammer over pipe scrap or bend over your knee [Chris Runge does this too]). This is an imperative ingredient (in my opinion) in a master and it will be required in this partnership to navigate the economics successfully. I mean ‘economics’ in its broadest terms. “rationing resources” Let me double click right here:

It IS… the experience that informs the craftsman to say: “oh that’s easy” and proceeds to use what he has available. It is the same for designer and Im sure I am speaking to the choir. You know. We need to, how do the kid say: “enter flow-state”

I will speak to this from my experience and hope that it is received well: In the steps from crude beginning to refined finishing I hear this across many of the disciplines again and again. When I make something that increase with intensity as it gets closer to being finished, each step has to build a level of confidence that the previous step was well executed. This point cannot be emphasized enough. This is where our culture has fallen apart.

Song which I will include because “we’ve got to do better”

for now, ill put a bookmark in the aetherfoil.
